The Keys That Used to Sound Different

Before equal temperament rendered all 12 keys acoustically identical, each carried measurably different degrees of roughness — a physical reality that composers from Mattheson to Schubart documented as practical guidance, and that the modern concert piano erased and can never restore.

The number is 427. That's how many cents wide the major third sits in the four least-favored pitch classes of quarter-comma meantone — the dominant tuning system in Western keyboard music from roughly 1500 to 1750 [S3]. The just-intonation ideal is 386 cents. Eight of the twelve pitch classes got thirds close to that: smooth, nearly wavering-free, acoustically clean [S3]. The remaining four — Db, F#, Ab, and B — got thirds of roughly 427 cents, producing the audible flutter known as beating that distinguished them, physically and sonically, from their purer neighbors [S3].

The beating was not a design flaw that better instrument building would eventually fix. It was structural. Every fixed-pitch meantone instrument carries exactly one "wolf fifth" — an interval of approximately 737 to 738 cents against the pure fifth's 702 cents — that is mathematically unavoidable [S4]. Stacking twelve meantone fifths falls short of seven pure octaves by an inescapable gap. That gap collapses into a single egregious interval somewhere on the keyboard. The wolf could be relocated — it typically fell between G# and Eb, or enharmonically between C# and Ab — but it could never be removed [S4]. Protect one cluster of keys, and another cluster absorbs the dissonance.

The result was a keyboard with a genuine gradient of roughness. A composer choosing C major was choosing nearly pure thirds and fifths — intervals whose frequencies lock into simple ratios and produce no audible beating [S3]. The catalog-keepers

Working composers and theorists noticed this, and they documented it systematically — not as poetic whim but as professional craft knowledge. Johann Mattheson's Das neu-eröffnete Orchestre (1713) contained one of the earliest systematic key-character catalogs in Western music theory [S5], treated as practical guidance for composers working in a world where key choice had real acoustic consequences. Mattheson wrote nearly a century before the Romantic era, which rules out any hypothesis that key character was a Romantic projection onto neutral intervals [S5]. Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart compiled his key-character catalog while imprisoned at Fortress Hohenasperg; he completed it around 1784 to 1785, and his son published it posthumously in Vienna in 1806 as Ideen zu einer Ästhetik der Tonkunst [S1]. Schubart assigned specific emotional qualities to all 24 major and minor keys. His C# minor: "Penitential lamentation, intimate conversation with God, the friend and help-meet of life; sighs of disappointed friendship and love lie in its radius" [S2]. His Ab major: "Key of the grave. Death, grave, putrefaction, judgment, eternity lie in its radius" [S2]. The darkest descriptors cluster precisely around the keys that in meantone carried the wolf fifth or the roughest thirds [S1][S3]. What looks like literary sensibility was tracking acoustic fact.

Here is also where a persistent popular misconception deserves a direct correction. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is routinely cited as evidence that equal temperament had arrived by the early 18th century and been endorsed by the era's greatest composer [S6]. It is not that evidence. Bach's title is Das Wohltemperierte Klavier — well-tempered, not equal-tempered — and the work was written to demonstrate well temperament: a system that is unequal but makes all 24 keys playable [S6]. Bach's point was precisely to display the variety of key colors as one progresses around the circle of fifths, not to erase them [S6]. The two concepts share one practical outcome (all keys usable) while differing entirely in acoustic character (distinct key colors versus acoustic uniformity). Most popular accounts collapse the distinction, erasing the very argument Bach was making.

The erasure

Equal temperament solved the wolf problem by dividing the octave into twelve exactly equal semitones of 100 cents each, making every key acoustically identical and eliminating beat-frequency differences between keys entirely [S3]. It spread gradually from around 1780, with piano manufacturers converging on it through the mid-to-late 19th century until it became the unquestioned default [S7].

The resistance was real and perceptual, not merely conservative. String players and choral singers could produce just intervals by ear and could hear the deterioration that equal temperament required of every interval except the octave [S7]. Samuel Sebastian Wesley was still publicly opposing the system in the mid-19th century [S7]. Part of what drove the final convergence was an irony of instrument design. The lighter string tension of early fortepianos and harpsichords had made the rough intervals of meantone relatively tolerable [S7]. The heavier-strung, overtone-rich concert piano of the Romantic era made those same intervals far more noticeable — by some accounts, excruciating [S7]. Equal temperament didn't merely become preferred; it became acoustically necessary given what the instrument had become.

The ghost

By the time keyboard manufacturers had converged on equal temperament, the vocabulary of key character had already decoupled from its referent. Under equal temperament, C# minor is acoustically indistinguishable from every other minor key [S3]. The physical basis for Schubart's "penitential lamentation" no longer exists in the instrument used to perform it [S1][S3]. In many pedagogical traditions, these emotional associations are still transmitted as received wisdom about the keys themselves [S2][S8], passed down from Baroque and Classical-era theorists who were documenting a real sensory gradient that the modern concert piano cannot reproduce.

The associations are the shadow of a physical phenomenon that no longer exists in the instrument used to play them.

What keeps this from being a closed historical footnote is that the phenomenon is recoverable. Period fortepianos and harpsichords tuned to historical temperaments are still performed on [S8]. Musicians who play them report that key colors become a genuine perceptual experience — not a metaphor, not a cultural convention, but something audible [S8]. When a pianist works through Haydn or Mozart on a fortepiano in period well temperament, the key choices begin to make a different kind of sense: the composer's selection of Ab major for a funeral movement, or C# minor for a passage of anguished pleading, stops being poetic convention and starts sounding like an acoustic fact [S8]. Almost no one sitting in a modern concert hall knows this is missing. The Moonlight Sonata gets performed in C# minor on an equal-tempered piano, and audiences receive its key as inherently dark and introspective — an association passed down from Schubart and his contemporaries [S1][S2], who were documenting something the instrument can no longer demonstrate. The sensory phenomenon is still out there, recoverable on instruments that still exist and are still played [S8]. It just isn't the default anymore, and almost nobody in a concert hall knows to miss it.
