The Brass Line That GPS Ignores
The brass line tourists straddle at Greenwich is 5.3 arc-seconds from where GPS says zero is — because satellite navigation abandoned telescope coordinates for Earth's center of mass in 1987, nudging the prime meridian 102 meters east to a park location marked mainly by a trash bin.
A stainless-steel strip set into the cobblestones outside the Royal Observatory in Greenwich has guided tourists to straddle hemispheres for over a century [S7]. Pull out a phone while standing on it and the screen reads 00° 00' 05.3'' W — not zero [S4]. To reach actual zero longitude, you'd need to walk about 102 meters east, down the hill, to where a municipal trash bin sits [S4, S5]. The world switched prime meridians and never moved the monument [S1, S4].
The 70-Percent Argument
The line traces back to the Airy Transit Circle, a telescope installed at the Royal Observatory in 1851 by Astronomer Royal Sir George Biddell Airy [S7]. When twenty-five nations gathered in Washington, D.C., in October 1884 to settle the global prime meridian question, the outcome was nearly predetermined [S2]. Seventy-two percent of the world's sea-commerce charts, measured by tonnage, already used Greenwich coordinates [S7]. The conference voted 22 to 1 — France and Brazil abstaining — to make the line through Airy's telescope official [S2].
France, which had pushed for Paris, continued using the Paris meridian on its own maps for another twenty-seven years after the vote, not adopting Greenwich until 1911 [S7]. The 1884 delegates were ratifying a practical fait accompli, not constructing a rigorous geometric Earth model — they had no concept of satellite geodesy, no global tracking network, no way to anchor coordinates to the planet's center of mass rather than a telescope in a London suburb [S1, S2].
GPS Redraws 0°
In 1987, GPS formally adopted WGS84 — the World Geodetic System, whose defining parameters were fixed in 1984 — as its navigation reference frame [S1]. Rather than anchoring zero longitude to any physical instrument, WGS84 is tied to Earth's center of mass, derived from satellite-tracking stations distributed across the planet [S1]. The best-fit solution placed 0° longitude 102 meters east of the Airy Transit Circle [S1, S4].
The immediate question is why 102 meters specifically — why not a few centimeters of accumulated measurement error, or a clean coincidence of zero?
The Plumb Line Problem
To aim a transit telescope at a star and determine longitude, you first need to know exactly which direction is vertical. At Greenwich, astronomers found the vertical by watching the surface of a mercury basin — wherever gravity pulled the liquid flat, that was down [S3].
The trouble is that gravitational "down" isn't perfectly parallel to Earth's rotation axis [S3]. Underground rock density varies across the crust, and denser formations pull the plumb line toward them [S3]. At Greenwich, the east-west component of this effect — called deflection of the vertical — is approximately 5.3 arc-seconds, directed eastward [S3]. That is precisely the magnitude of the gap between the brass line and GPS zero [S1, S3].
A 2015 study in the Journal of Geodesy by Malys, Seago, Pavlis, Seidelmann, and Kaplan concluded that the entire 102-meter displacement is accounted for by this deflection of the vertical at Greenwich, combined with the requirement to preserve continuity in the UT1 astronomical time series when transitioning from astronomical to satellite-based reference frames [S1]. The 1884 delegates, calibrating against local gravity, had inadvertently encoded a gravitational quirk of the London basin into what they intended as a universal standard [S1, S3].
The Most Ironic Landmark on Earth
The International Reference Meridian — the GPS zero line — runs through Greenwich Park, within sight of the Royal Observatory [S5]. It has no official plaque, no sign, no marker of any kind [S5]. The nearest identifiable object on the true prime meridian is a municipal trash bin, which the internet has dubbed the "Prime Litter Bin" and which draws GPS-toting visitors who post photographs of themselves straddling it [S5].
The first dedicated public plaque marking the IRM anywhere in the world was installed not at Greenwich but in Highams Park — an unremarkable outer-London neighborhood — in the week of October 28, 2019, set into a sidewalk near the corner of Hale End Road and Beech Hall Road [S6].
Even a properly sited marker wouldn't stay accurate for long. The IRM is fixed to Earth's center of mass while the physical ground at Greenwich shifts through tectonic drift at several centimeters per year [S5]. Any monument placed on the GPS prime meridian today would wander off zero within decades — the meridian and the monument exist in fundamentally incompatible frames of reference.
The Deeper Map
Every geographic coordinate in common use — on a map, a boarding pass, a weather report — is defined relative to a physical model of Earth's shape [S1]. When that model improves, when coordinates can be derived from orbit rather than from a telescope leveled against local gravity, the numbers quietly migrate [S1]. Nobody bothers to move the monuments.
The brass line has stood where it was in 1884 [S7]. It photographs well. It bridges hemispheres with satisfying symmetry. But pull out a phone and the disagreement is right there: you'll cross 0° longitude several steps before reaching the famous strip in the cobblestones [S4]. That small gap is a precise record of how much better we've gotten at knowing where we are.
